ECHOES OF FREEDOM

My only mistake was standing up for the right

That alone was sufficient to warrant my plight

In the hope I would stop, I was forced away

Condemned to savage uncertainty and barbaric dismay

Forced to atone for projecting my people’s afflictions

And to acknowledge the oppressors’ perfections

A fleeting week in murky confinement, unclad!

My sacrifice one day being worthwhile made me glad

Those sworn to fortify my life had vowed to take it

Made me praise their name for sparing my spirit

Instead of stealing voices to silence dissent

The youth rise louder, their spirits unbent

Poetic piece by Winston Churchill, a student of law at the University of Nairobi, Parklands Campus
